What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present. It's challenging because our minds constantly race. Even children are preoccupied with the future, preventing them from enjoying the present moment. Mindfulness isn't an activity; it's a state of being.
Mindfulness Techniques for Kids:
1. The '5 Things' Game: This exercise grounds children in the present. Ask them to identify five things they see, hear, or feel in their surroundings. This shifts their focus from anxiety about the future to the present moment.
2. 10 Deep Breaths: Conscious, slow breathing calms the brain. Guide your child to lie down, place a hand on their belly, and take 10 slow, deep breaths, filling their belly with each inhale and exhaling slowly with eyes closed. Start with 5 breaths if 10 is too much.
3. Drawing Emotions: Children often struggle to express intense emotions verbally. Encourage them to draw their feelings – scribbles, lines, or detailed pictures – as a way to release these emotions. Pair this with deep breathing, connecting the breath to the drawing strokes.
4. The Silence Game: This teaches children the power of stillness. Set a timer and have them sit or lie quietly, eyes closed, maintaining complete silence. This fosters inner calm.
